Invisalign Q & A

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a unique system designed to transform the way your teeth look, using clear aligners instead of wires or brackets. These clear aligners can treat many conditions, including:

  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Overly crowded teeth
  • Gapped teeth

Using proprietary SmartForce® and SmartTrack® material, the aligners are virtually invisible to those around you. They’re worn for 20-22 hours per day, as patients only take them out to eat, brush, and floss.

Every one to two weeks, the patient receives a new set of aligners to wear. Over time, they see the progress Invisalign provides for their teeth.

Invisalign is an excellent treatment for adults and teens. It’s rarely given to children, though, as their smiles are more complicated to correct. Improving your teeth through Invisalign not only boosts your confidence in your smile but also enhances your oral health, as teeth are easier to clean when they are straight.

How does Invisalign work?

First, Dr. Akel examines your bite and comes up with a treatment plan for alignment. He uses a digital scanning system to create a 3D image of your teeth. That way, he can map out how he will move each tooth and when. Here, you’ll determine if Invisalign is the best form of treatment for your bite.

Each set of aligners shifts your teeth slightly until they are fully in place. After treatment, you’ll need to wear a custom-made retainer at night to maintain your smile. With each new set of aligners, you’ll be able to see your ongoing progress.

Why choose Invisalign over traditional braces?

While both Invisalign and traditional braces are viable solutions for straightening teeth, Invisalign provides many advantages that traditional braces simply cannot.

Many patients are embarrassed by the appearance of braces, keeping them from exuding confidence in their smile. The wires and brackets of braces can poke and scrape against your cheeks, causing pain and bleeding. Invisalign offers the straightening power of braces without the hassle of these wires and brackets.

Because aligners are removed to eat, patients can enjoy all of their favorite foods during treatment, without the dietary restrictions of normal braces. Since you also remove them to brush and floss, you’re able to keep your teeth clean and healthy during treatment.

Some dental insurance plans cover Invisalign. If you’re interested in Invisalign to correct your smile, contact Dr. Akel today. He’ll get to work on a treatment plan that will give you a smile you’ve always wanted.
