Veneers Q & A

What are veneers?

Veneers are thin, porcelain shells that cover the front surface of the teeth. They can be bonded to the front of your teeth to change their color, shape, size, or length. Veneers can improve the way your teeth look, solving common problems like:

  • Discolored teeth
  • Worn down teeth
  • Chipped teeth
  • Misaligned teeth
  • Gaps between teeth

Veneers usually last between seven and 15 years. After this time, you may need to contact Dr. Akel for a replacement.

What should I expect when getting veneers?

Typically, veneer placement takes three appointments. Dr. Akel begins with a consultation, where you explain to him the problems you are having with your tooth.

He then exams your mouth to make sure veneers are the correct solution to your problem. He may even offer an X-ray of your teeth to get a better idea of your situation.

During the second appointment, Dr. Akel prepares your tooth for the veneer. He removes one-half mm of enamel from the surface of the tooth, which is equal to the size of the veneer. Then, he makes a digital impression of the tooth and sends it to a dental laboratory where the veneer is made.

That process usually takes between two to four weeks.

During the third appointment, the veneer is cemented to your tooth. Dr. Akel starts by making sure the veneer fits and is the proper color. Before he cements the veneer, he cleans, etches, and polishes your tooth, roughening the surface to make the bonding process easier.

Once he cements the veneer to your tooth, he shines a light beam on the veneer, which activates the cement. After Dr. Akel removes excess cement, assesses your bite, and makes any final adjustments, the procedure is complete.

Why get dental veneers?

There are many reasons dental veneers might be the right solution for your dental issue, including:

  • They are stain resistant
  • The color of the veneers match your normal teeth
  • They are an aesthetic alternative to crowns
  • Gums tolerate porcelain well

If you’re considering dental veneers, book an appointment online with Dr. Akel today. He’ll examine your teeth to see if veneers are the right course of treatment for you.
